EDUC 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Synaptic Pruning, Novelty Seeking, Limbic System
Document Summary
Development applies to changes that occur over a rather long period of time and in an orderly manner. Development occurs over time, when babies learn to walk they might be a little wobbly at first but as time goes on they become more stable. Cognitive development in particular refers to changes in the way an individual thinks, learns, reasons and acquires knowledge. Development is due to both nature and nurture. Some aspects of development are continuous while other aspects are discontinuous. Early experience and later experience are both important when considering development. The limbic region matures ahead of the prefrontal region. The limbic system involves emotional involvement, novelty seeking and risk taking behaviours. Since limbic develops before prefrontal, adolescents seek out risk taking behaviours and do(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e the limbic aspect to control them. Brain growth spurt from last trimerster (prenatal) to 2 years of age. At birth: 100 to 200 billion neurons; each neuron has approcimately 2500 synapses.
