The main entrance way to the acropolis, literarly means the double gate. Strange this was the 2nd chronological building made. Shows priorities of phedias and the planners of all this. Started in 437, year the parthenon was dedicated. Fragments of inscriptions, tell us different pieces of info for the finances and the name of the architect. Had been a gateway in this location as part of archaic acropolis. So it replaced old 6th century entrance destroyed by persians. Made from pentelic marble, was built on two different levels. (land rises). 1 choice is to level the ground, the other choice is to incorporate the two rises in land into the architecture and its what they did. Strategically important, main entrance, the point where the procession enters the acropolis and becomes part of athena world. Couple of transitions expressed: from low ground to higher ground, outside to inside the acropolis, secular world to the sacred world.
