Document Summary

Model organisms and common experimental techniques incell biology. Eukaryotes have conserved mechanisms to control cellular processes: yeast, arabidopsis, c, elegans, drosophila, xenopus, zebrafish and mice are examples of commonly used model organisms , different organisms offer unique advantages, depending on the question of interest. Common techniques include genetics, different types of microscopy, centrifugation, rnai, transgenics, optogenetics, gene editing (e. g. cripser), drug treatments. Main advantages: simple model with no other interferences, fast cycling times, large populations, genetically identical, cost efficient. Useful because they have tissues (above cell level) so can study cell cell interaction. Behavior (how does the organism respond to different environmental cues) They have a central nervous system, not just peripheral (brain!!) Frogs <3 (x. laevis south african clawed frog) Ion channels: you can express an ion channel of interest within the oocyte and you can measure them at the electricity level. Main advantages: these frogs can make these really big oocytes that are packed with material.
