Animal Reproduction
46.1 Both Asexual and Sexual reproduction occur in the kingdom
Two modes of animal reproduction sexual and asexual
Sexual reproduction fusion of haploid gametes from a diploid cell, the
zygote
Animal develops from zygote can in turn give rise to gametes by meiosis
Female gamete egg, is a large, nonmotile cell
Male gamete sperm, is generally a such smaller motile cell
Asexual reproduction= generation of new individuals without the fission of
egg and sperm
Reproduction relies entirely on mitotic cell division
Mechanisms of Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction are found only among invertebrates
Fission= separation of a parent organism into two individuals of equal size
Among invertebrates is budding in which new individuals arise from
outside growths of existing ones
Another form of asexual reproduction involves two steps: fragmentation=
the breaking of the body into several pieces followed by regeneration= the
regrowth of lost body parts annelid worms, sponges, cnidarians, bristle
worms and sea squirts reproduce in these two steps
Parthenogenesis= asexual reproduction in which an egg develops without
being fertilized bees, wasps, and aunts
Progeny can be haploid or diploid
Sexual reproduction
By producing offspring of varied genotypes, SR may enhance the
reproductive success of parents when environmental factors such as
pathogens, change relatively rapidly
However, asexual reproduction is expected to be the most advantageous in
stable, favourable environments bc it perpetuates successful genotypes
faithfully and precisely
Recombination during SR may be beneficial bc it can speed up adaptations.
only when mutations are high in a small population (more theoretical)
Another way to look at it is that the shuffling of genes during SR might allow
a pop to get rid of harmful genes easier
