Document Summary

Variety of pathogens : viruses: hiv, human immunodeficiency virus, bacteria: strep throat, streptococcus pyogenes, parasites: athlete"s foot, fungus. When they are outside the host body, they crystallize. When they are inside of the host, they use host machinery to replicate. Three major divisions of the immune system: physical barrier (innate, non-specific immunity (innate, specific immunity (adaptive) Skin is the largest organ, it prevents entry of pathogens. Forms nearly impenetrable wall, keeping pathogens from entering body tissues. Consists of mucous membranes, skin, and associated anti-pathogen secretions. Recognizes and destroys pathogens that breach external barriers. Responds to all pathogens in the same way. White blood cells involved in non-specific immunity: neutrophils. Phagocytic cells that ingest small organisms, primarily bacteria (they eat it) Destroy both pathogen and themselves in the process. Nucleus is multi-lobed, not round: macrophages. Phagocytic cells that ingest whole pathogen as well as large debris, such as dead cells.
