ARTH 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Lorenzo Ghiberti, Contrapposto, Dive Bomber
Document Summary
They looked to classic arts - and attempted to emulate that style. Lorenzo ghiberti, north doors, 1403-24, baptistery, florence: tells the story of the life of christ, starts to look at classical sculpture, a sense of grace and balance in the sculpture - an essence from classical culture. Everything being balanced - what someone does on one side it is responded to on the other side. 1403-24: key differences: depiction of plants g has a lot more care - sculpting almost every leaf individually - but not thinking about how a tree looks from afar. Perspective - earlier is flatter: water - pisanos: seems like a curtain in front of him, ghiberti: it is flowing underneath him. The way the bird is shown dive bombing christs head (just a figural bord) vs. the bird flying over christs hear and is just a little nub.
