It was easier to make them flat than rounded: hasidic importance, duccio"s style evolution, from maria novella to the duomo - they have become smoother and looking for a more naturalistic feeling. Showed that you knew all the techniques that were expected of a master: setting the standards of their profession. Provided social benefits: wool merchants guild, were entrusted w making things for the baptistry. They created the large bronze doors: had 28 quatrefoils, 20 of them were the life of st. john the baptist, and the bottom 8 depict seated personifications of virtues, somewhat decorative.
