ANTH 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Pearson Education, Breast Implant, Margaret Mead
Document Summary
The first important thing to explain to lili is the contrast of gender identity that is attached to various cultures. Like margaret mead has explained, assumptions about gender differences are socially constructed as opposed to biologically determined (jourdan, lesson 10, slide 3). Some cultures have strict views about gender differentiation while others have very fine lines between maleness and femaleness and may even allow a third gender (miller, et al. , 2010, p. 161). For example, in india, some hijras are born with either distinct or mixed gender genitals. However, they grow up dressing up and acting like women, without clearly being considered male or female (miller, et al. , 2010, p. 163). Western societies are on the opposite end of the spectrum. People grow up and are categorized and labelled by gender; determining how they should look or act accordingly.
