Document Summary

Looks to see at what public perceptions are on the changes made by bill c-10. Analyzed two different surveys made by outside sources. Public has perception that sentencing is too lenient. Public now has a restorative justice type of view of sentencing instead of the past view of incapacitation. The public does not know much about the criminal justice system. Lack of information about the cjs by the public could be due to policy makers or media not relaying enough information to them. The public feels that drunk driving, sexual crimes and murder should be punished more harshly than other crimes. When public is given more information about the crime or given more info about the cjs system in general their thoughts on sentencing were more lenient. Public does not want judge to lose discretionary powers when it comes to sentencing. Public has a more rehabilitative view of punishment towards youth then it does towards adults.
