Importance o 1) recognition of high number of individuals represented within prison population o 2) mental health issues are important b/c there are few facilities for treatment in place to address people with psychiatric problems. Police aren"t equipped to handle the mentally ill they need training in how to handle these situations. Should be a role of decreasing violence not making it worse. Reasons police do not want to get involved in issues involving mental health issues: o 1. Do not know signs of psychological disorder and don"t want to get involved.
