SOCI 2450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Impulsivity, Longitudinal Study, Control Theory
Document Summary
Containment theory: compares to the immune system of the body. How effectively can you contain crime: external containment is holding power of the group :ie, the influences that exist in society to stop crime (police, prisons, inter containment: the ability to stop yourself. Belief that people have the power to control themselves. Why do some comply, and others do not. Ie, it is still illegal to smoke marijuana, and yet most people have smoked it. The severity of punishment does not impact crime. How do you contribute to you society: belief: you share common values with the society you live in. Look at (1)onset of crime, (2)persistence and (3)desistance then track through their life and collect data (longitudinal study- lasts over three years: look at dev. Through replication we know what risk factors are. Individual risk factors: impulsivity, low intelligence, large families=increased probability you were involved in crime.
