Some things that are normal can be considered deviant if done in excess. Police are most likely going to deal with blue collar crime rather than white collar crime. Uses durkheim"s idea of anomie to explain crime and deviance. People go after institutional means and cultural goals. Innovation: accepting the goals but not the means. Conformity: accepting the means and the goals of society. Ritualist: accepting the means but not the goals. (happy with working menial job, not interested in rich lifestyle. Retreatist: not accepting the means or the goals. Feeling anomie is the feeling of worthlessness, no attachment to any society or groups, being alienated . Even in a society of saints there would be crime . However when the crime rates increase too highly then pathological crime is taking place. Anomic society: disjunction between institutional means and cultural goals. Society encourages people to achieve status but not everyone can achieve it.
