Effects of a deviant label: (latent, positive and negative functions) Negative implications of a criminal charge on an individual: ex: sexual offender registry. Treated in a punitive way by community: ex: wife beaters, child molesters. People apply a morally inferior label to individuals. Centralizing label: labels that provide comprehensive overview of that individual"s personalities by the crime they committed. Deviancy is an alternative form of goal setting: do not want to work a normal job. Raises awareness and solidarity: deviancy promotes boundary maintenance. Boundary maintenance: fighting in the nhl, boundaries between legal and illegal roughness. Scapegoating: when something goes wrong we have to blame someone. Raising the value of conformity: after someone is charged with an offence it"s believed a society with conform. Deviancy is an early warning system of decay within the society. Vested interest: creates jobs. (cops, lawyers, penitentiary workers)
