How to approach a research on deviance: select and define the research problem, formulae thesis, formulate design theory, collect data, analyze results, formulate a series of recommendations, draw conclusion. Challenges: establishing relationships: building repoir with criminal and victims in order for them to trust you and reveal crucial information, acquisition of information (collecting data) Empathetic explanations: try to approach the situation from the point of the accused. Scientific explanations: use the scientific method to attempt to control for observations. Make predictions based on risk factors that come up. Takes in all factors (research hypothesis, surveys vs. experiments, collecting data, finding research problem) Ideological explanations: systems of ideas that are held as true. Self report study: asking individuals to admit to crimes or actions in a completely anonymous survey. Field observation: going out into the sections of a area where crime is being committed (first hand experience)
