New rules challenging old rules forced society to respond. Durkheim: crime is normal; comes from stable society. Tendency toward deviance is built into the system. Capitalist society; driven by need for power, money, success. Disjunction (gap between what you have and what you want) between institutional means (ability to achieve x) and cultural goals (to achieve money and success in a society that values money and success) Anomie: normlessness (creates society where certain things happen; anomic society: isolation, distance war-torn countries) Eunomie: any of the protection factors, forces, elements that protect society from becoming dysfunctional, disorganized, unstable. Doing what society says to get what society says you should want.
