One of the most effective forms of deterrence of deviant behaviour is a loving, healthy family. Learning what respect is at a young age; setting examples throughout life. Fieldwork with deviant populations: must have access. Gain by invitation into deviant group; be seen as part of the woodwork, not an outsider; establish relationship: have a plan to go about gaining that information, research within your interests. Know what you"re looking for, have a plan of what you want to learn, how. 3 basic types of explanations (regarding theories: empathetic explanation: in deviant studies, this approach looks at things from the actor"s point of view. Understanding why they did what they did. One person"s perspective is not sufficient evidence to create policy: scientific explanation/ empirical approach: using a scientific methodology (hypothesis, research design, administer survey/questionnaire)
