Individual: act and actor engaging in deviance, claim difference between deviant vs. non-deviant individuals. Improper socialization: causes + motivation of deviance, low self-control, social chaos/instability, blocked opportunities, prevention by uncovering why people engage in deviant acts (motivation) View deviance: deviant act, actor engaging in deviance. Subjective: society, can"t know deviance when we see it, must be told behaviour is deviant. Focus: nature of social expectations, perceptions of act, reactions to the act (society"s reaction) Influence of power in defining and understanding deviance. View deviance: socially constructed, society decides what is deviant, society determines conforming behaviour, theses definitions change over time in different contexts. How people develop understandings of world around them. Negotiate the meaning of situations with others. How we make sense of world and ourselves. All humans are social creatures: constant interaction. Mind and self aren"t innate: products of social environment. Identities (sense of who we are) product of social interaction. Humans define self + others through communication.
