Based on 2 major approaches: totalitarian approach= maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain, economic choice = people will commit offences to meet their basic ecological needs; something that will get away with and that they need. Assumes people make these decisions in a premeditated way. Also crime is neither extraordinary nor the product of an unorganized mind. Impulsivity is a high risk factor; we can make accurate predictions based on risk factors. Focuses on the routine activities of everyday life (going to work, running) Evidence of its use back in 1947 when economic conditions had improved in northern america. * 80%* of crimes= the offender and victim know each other. Arrest statistics are more accurate than court statistics. Police statistics and more reliable than court statistics.
