Victim precipitated homicide: victim is the first one to use aggression (physical or verbal) and first to use a weapon. Non-victim precipitated homicide: victim played no role in their victimization. Substantial # of all homicides are victim precipitated. Stranger victimization is rare usually someone you know. Majority of victims are known to police (criminal records) Subculture of violence impoverished neighbourhoods; education level. Theories about why people kill andrew henry & james short. External restraint: you are restrained from being violent towards other people b/c of pressures that you face (police, courts, prison) outward aggression & frustration: e. g. male prisons fights; homicide. Internal restraint: not aggressive towards others because of internal conscience: e. g. female prisons cut themselves; suicide. Abuse at young age precipitates violence/aggression in adulthood. 2 types of socialization for childrearing : physical punishment to deter child from misbehaviour risk factor for later violence and aggression, psychological punishment to correct misconduct lecture.
