Lecture 6
Hagel was known as the father of idealism. Idealism is the major school of thought. It is
believed that ideas come first and they are the ones the drive and materializes on the
ground in reality. this idea come from “up there” it could come from spirituality, or any
kind of actions.
Idealism is really about with a political message “do not touch the status quo” Marx was
living during that time; however, his thoughts came later on by arguing that the world is
not constructed this way. In Marx there is new concept, historical materialism. Ibn-
Khaldun had the same ideas but he didn’t know what the concepts are.
There are two different points of view one is idealism and the other is materialism (actual
conditions of people on the ground).
Materialism is largely determined and influenced by how and under what conditions
people produce and reproduce themselves in actual real historical moments. Idealism
largely refers to the belief system which talks about believes and ideas as central to
human development. Materialism asserts that it is the material condition of people that
determines their ideas or human labor and human history that determines their ideas. The
ideas and the thoughts is a reflection of material life condition. Ex. Class is largely
developed when there were groups of people packed in factories made in sort of one
group which are labeled as working class. For Marx, the whole idea of class came from
reality. to have a class, you have to have an opposite class.
In fur Bach Marx begins with a critic of philosophical religious. Marx criticizes those
who explained history as the make or the work of the mind. History is not about great
mind. According to Marx the premise from which one must begin must understand
history is not religion, it is not spirituality but rather it is we should start from real people.
From their specific historical lives. the premise of the method of “men and (women) not
in any fantastic isolation or rigidity but in their actual empirically perceptible process of
development under definite condition as soon as active practice is described, history
ceases to be as a collection of dead facts.” (Pg. 238-239.)
5 stages or modes of production Marx talked about. The mode of production approach is
a frame work which provides a scientific understanding of changes in the structures and
forms of human social relations in general. This includes changed in family structures,
and male -female relationship, changes in the role of the state, also includes changes in
the economy and changed in the concept of private economy.
This frame of historical materialism provides the contextual understanding of women
oppression. Marxism talks very much about historical specificity. Historical materialism
known as the mode of production provide a conceptual approach for understanding of
human social relations.
Modes of productions forces of productions relations of productions.
Relations of production is important because it becomes class relations.
Forces of production prior to capitalism were mainly two thing (human beings using tools
such as animals, land, and livestock. With time, these tools gradually develop, they
become bigger tools until they become robots.)
- Tools of production
- Means of production
Epoch/ stage/ modes of production.
