Standardized: collect data from large number of respondents, assume researcher can minimize bias by making everything in interview uniform, aim to collect structured data, require closed-ended or forced-choice questions. Only provide rough sketch of respondents" true responses, feelings or attitudes questions. Assume all respondents understand and interpret questions research intended. Presume response options provided by researcher will be exhaustive: won"t exclude other valid answers respondent might provide. Assume researchers can construct mutually exclusive response to survey: i. e. only one clear answer to a question assume its possible for interviewer to present script in neutral manner consistent across multiple interviews. Main purpose: allow people to explain experiences, attitudes, feelings, and definitions of situation in own terms meaningful to them spectrum of qualitative interviews from semi-structured" to completely unstructured: predetermined topic but open-ended questions. E. g. what its like to be full time student while working full time: list of areas" want to cover and provide little direction to person.
