Soci 2001 a lecture 12: emerging trends in qualitative research and course wrap- Changing trends driven by broader changes in technology. Rise in social media providing new opportunities for qualitative research: provide greater access to certain people as a means of communication. E. g. using text of video chat to conduct interviews with diverse geographically dispersed population: research in and of itself (studying fb or blog posts) Greater access to more data: may be too much data, potentially blurring boundary between qualitative and quantitative research. Some concerns and challenges with online qualitative research. Allows research participants to tell their stories using images. Three main goals: i. e. , photos or videos, enable people to record and reflect on their experiences, promote critical dialogue and knowledge about important issues through large and small group discussion of photos, reach policy-makers. Different epistemological underpinnings: quantitative vs qualitative, positivism vs. constructionism. Issues of bias and objectivity in qualitative research and need to be reflexive.
