Document Summary

Deviance > occurs when someone departs from a norm and evokes a negative reaction from others not in trouble with the law. Crime > a deviance that is against the law ex: speeding. A law is norm stipulated and enforced by government bodies . Clarifying the sociological usage of the term sanctions: penalties, sometimes imposed by way of discipline or punishment. Informal punishment: involves a mild sanction that is imposed during face-to- face interaction, not by an institution. Ex: raised eyebrows, gossiping, ostracism, shaming, or stigmatization. Formal punishment: takes place when an institution ( the judicial system) penalizes someone for breaking regulation. Stigma: when people are stigmatized, they are negatively evaluated because of a marker that distinguishes them from others (erving goffman, 1963) ex: elementary school when kids get pulled out into the hall, they are labelled as the bad kid.
