Slavery predates the concept of race as we understand it today. In the united states, concept of race and freedom emerged together. Most genetic variation is within, not between races (intra-, not inter-) Though race is not biological, racism is still. Social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers. Compromises people whose perceived cultural markers are deemed socially significant. They differ from one another in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors and the like. Beliefs based on a visible characteristic of a group, such as skin colour or religious garment. Organizational policies and practices that systematically discriminate based on racial outliers. An attitude that holds judgment of a group based on pre- conceived ideas/characteristics. A person or category of people blamed for someone else"s problems or actions. Changes in one"s social context can also eventually lead to changes in one"s racial and ethnic self-conception. Perspectives on hoe to best negotiate ethnic self-conception.
