Document Summary

Demography is the study of causes and consequences of population growth. Demographers measure birth rate (total fertility rate, or how many children per woman). A crude birth rate is how many children are born in a year for every 1000 people. The death rate refers to the deaths that happen through every 1000 people- the infant mortality rate refers to the deaths of children that are under one. They also measure the growth rate (demographic component equation) which is the difference of births and deaths plus emigration and immigration. Thomas malthus (1766-1834) believed that we would have a global crisis because population grows exponentially, and food supply only grows in consecutive numbers. Karl marx (1818-1883) believed that the distribution of wealth and resources as the source of corruption (or illness) in society. Demographic transition theory parallels modernization theory (seen in globalization lecture). They are parallel because they both look at the effects of industrialization.
