George simmel the metropolis and mental life (1903) The mental life" of the metropolitan type": more intellectualized & rational, develops as protection against the intense emotional stimulation of city life, city people are typically considered as cold & distant. Ex. driving in a city: detachment required to successfully drive in a city, testament to how rationalized people must be in the city. Ex. road rage when these protective barriers" fall: responding to things & people around you in an emotional manner. You can do your own thing" in a city. A type of economy through which goods & services exchanged for money. Different from a barter economy: the money economy & the intellectualized/rational mentality go hand in hand. Both display a matter of factness" in relation to people & things: a way of dealing with people that slightly distances oneself.
