Consumer capitalist societies produce unstable personality types. Reflect the contradictions inherent in consumer capitalism. We must repress, deny, delay future gratification self discipline for the work ethic. On the other hand we are encouraged to endlessly and immediately gratify our desires- self indulgence for the consumer ethic. The regulation of desire becomes a problem. We are besieged by endless temptation but at the same time condemned for indulging. We are told we can have it all weight loss without exercise.
