Rock and roll is hybrid of black music reproduced by poor white southerners to rebel against older generation values. First form of music to be popularized through recordings. Less improvisation in white rock and roll compared to black version. Instead of a band collaborative the singer gains much of the praise. Commercial music is means to create profit not expression. People get attached to a simple part of the song because the songs are so primitive. Hip hop began as a way to speak out. Emerged as a way to speak out with rage with social inequality. Oppose police and white pillars of american culture.
