Document Summary

Visible minorities: the employment equity act defines "visible minority" as "persons, other than. Aboriginal peoples, who are non-caucasian in race or non-white in colour. " Race of people or groups that are subordinates, or lack power in society regardless of skin colour or country of origin. Settler society: a society historically based on colonization through foreign settlement and displacement of aboriginal inhabitants. Race: superficial physical differences that society considers significant. Ethnicity: shared culture- the practices, beliefs, values, language, religion, tradition etc of a group. Race and ethnicity are basis of social inequalities. Race is not biologically identifiable, rather people are racialized through a social process that marks them for unequal treatment based on perceived physiological differences. For example, when considering skin colour, social construction of race recognizes that the dark and light complexion of skin is due to evolution process based on sunlight availability in different parts of the world.
