SOCI 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Upper Middle Class, Lower Middle Class, Social Class
Document Summary
His definition of social class is based on the group"s relation to the means of production (ownership or non-ownership of productive property or capital). Weber defined social class as the life chances", or opportunities to acquire the resources available. He defined class wtr to the market" rather than the means of production. He says, life chances available to an individual depend on the value of one"s products or skills. Weber"s analysis of class involves various factors to determine the class of a person. These various factors include education, occupation, wealth, income etc and not just the economic position of an individual. Class stratifications is not determined by a group"s economic position but by the prestige of groups" occupation, education level, consumption and lifestyle. Based on weber"s approach, sociologists divide classes into upper, middle and lower classes in a way that mixes status categories with class categories.
