Document Summary

Neurons- singular cells that receive, process and transmit information. Mostly only communication with other neurons but some get signals from sensory organs. Start: sensory neuron (e. g. skin), would connect or synapse with an afferent nerve in somatic nervous system to carry information from sensory receptors to cns to the brain. Middle: interneuron- within the cns have short or no axon, integrate incoming information and organize within cns. End: motor neuron (muscle fibre) receives incoming signal from efferent nerve in somatic nervous system to carry information from cns to muscle cells to the body. Soma- cell body, contains cell nucleus and chemical machinery common to most cells. The rest of the cell exclusively handles information. Dendrites- specialized in receiving information, branches of dendrites called dendritic trees. Dendritic spines- bumps to match up with terminal buttons on neurons in brain. Axon- long and thin fibre that transmits signals to other neurons or glands.
