Socialization: process of becoming a functional member of society, process of learning social norms. Produces functional individuals that can contribute to society. A way of understanding the nurture" side of the nature/nurture debate (ie. gender; males are more aggressive) Inspired by durkheim: parsons believed that society could be stable as long as everyone did their jobs, maintaining a status quo society, all institutions serve speci c functions. Functions of the family: heterosexual nuclear family model. Family allows for socialization of children and adults: gender roles need to be played out, men play an instrumental role and women are socialized into an expressive role, men get stu done , women care and nurture .
