Document Summary

Chapter 17 (lecture 4) treatment and therapy. Clients differ in terms of their personal histories and types of dysfunction but also in other key ways related to their expectancies, goals, motives and personality styles. Failure to take into account these differences could undermine the potential effectiveness of whatever therapy is being implemented. Lambert concluded that personal attributes of the client, including personality differences may account for as much as 40% of the variability differences in therapy. Used this hypothesis as an explanation for when clients seek therapy. They suggested that clients seek help not just because of their symptoms but because these symptoms are accompanied by a state of demoralization: these could include feelings of alienation, helplessness, hopelessness and feeling incompetent. For those who felt demoralized, a key factor is whether they have a pessimistic or optimistic belief that therapy will work or at least has a chance to.
