Abuse of prescription drugs include abuse of psychotropic medications. These include; pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, sedatives and barbituates. Diversion: use of prescription drugs for purposes other than that for which they are intended or prescribed. Canada is specifically problematic in the sense that there are no accurate statistics in canada. Although no accurate statistics exist there is a sense amongst researchers and drug treatment professionals that, in recent years, there has been a move away from illicit drugs towards the use of diverted psychotropic prescriptions drugs. Diversion from treatment programs (methadone for example) Physician fraud there are a small number of physicians responsible for writing prescriptions for large quantities of oxycontin. There are several reasons as to why people divert one of which is that it is very lucrative. It is one of the only cases in which stolen goods increase in street value.
