Document Summary
Lecture 1 january 11 th : theories of addiction. Moral, biological, and the sociological model argues that some people are more likely based on biology, not theories. Cognitive and social psychological theory states that we are social beings and that our reality is based on our senses and interactions. Imply that drug users are bad or sinful people. Beliefs or judgments about right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable. Treatment: bad people who should be punished no real focus on treating, intervening, helping. There is a major stigma around drug use, judgments about those who use. Substance abuse as a crime has become a health issue, moved from health canada to justice canada; less a health matter and more a criminal matter, which is sad. There are 4 pillars to canada"s drug strategy: prevention, intervention, supply reduction, harm reduction. Offers no real help to the person. No evidence that punishment reduces or eliminates problematic use.
