Examples: phencyclidine (pcp-angel dust, lysergic acid diethyl amide (lsd-acid, methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (mdma ecstasy, trimethoxyphenethylamine (peyote, psilocybin (magic mushrooms, delta -9-tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis) Opioid analgesics: pain killers, plant used is opium/poppies, mimic analgestic actions of endorphins that are naturally in system, inhibit release of pain-inducing transmitters, highly addictive & really powerful. Examples: codeine, opium, morphine (ms continuous), heroin, methadone, demerol, dilaudid, fentanyl, oxycondone, contin= continuous release. Ethyl alcohol: sedative-hypnotic, psycho-active drug, affects cns stimulant and depressant. Benzodiazepines: produces a sense of calm and well-being, tranquillizing, sedating, anxiety and sleep disorders, diverted for non-medical disorders (for medical purposes that can be used for non medical purposes) Examples: diazepam (valium), oxazepam (serax), aplrazepam (ativan) Stimulants: excite or stimulate cns functioning (psychostimulant, increases dopaminergic activity, elevate mood, increase motor activity, increase alertness, reduce/allay sleep, sense of well-being. Examples: cocaine and crack cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, caffeine, tobacco, ritalin. Barbituates: anti-anxiety, sense of calm, drowsiness and well-being, sedating, sleep-inducing.
