Despite the media, youth crimes are decreasing significantly in canada. Admin of justice is main charge for youth. They are more likely to get probation or short custodial sentence (less than 6 months) Least charged offence is murder and sexual assaults. Age/crime curve: most crime is perpetrated by youth and young adults. Different types/typologies of offenders exist (life course persistent vs. adolescent limited) Different causal pathways exist for different types of offenders with different prognoses. Has prosocial skills (education) to achieve goals (respect: can outgrow criminal personality traits. Lack skills to adopt prosocial alternatives to gain goals (respect, control etc. ) Causes and outcomes: life course persistent (lcp) offender: cause: interaction between vulnerable predisposition and criminogenic environment, maintenance: cumulative developmental forces account for continuity from childhood to adulthood, prognosis: poor, likely to maintain criminal lifestyle well into adulthood. Father had a history of alcoholism and drug arrests, was largely absent during her childhood.
