Conceptual and rule knowledge comprehension: fundamental language processes and processes we use to comprehend realistic samples of language; what we do when we read, understand and remember sentences. Beliefs: belief in your own knowledge as well. Beliefs are prominent and are critical to comprehension and memory. Flavour of strategies": focus to sentences by using mechanisms like first mention and certain kinds of references. Pragmatics: do you have the time ex not meant literally. How people structure remarks and how they understand remarks of other; implicit, tacit knowledge. Early research/ jarvella had subjects read lengthy passages, interrupted them at unpredicted times and were told to write down what they remembered before being interrupted. Once sentence is completed, they file away overall meaning/gist and turn attention to next sentence. Tested this by pairs of sentences varying in structure, whether middle clause completed sentence or not. Recall of first and last clause unaffected by sentence structure.
