PSYC 2700 Lecture 6: Class # 6
Document Summary
The objective of this lecture is to move from the original concept of sts to the concept of working memory. We differentiated sts based on: sts encoding, select/take in from sensory memory, retrieve from lts, reduction & elaboration encoding, reduction = rude the number of things to remember by clustering/clumping things together to make it esier. Sts duration: 15-20 secs (if not rehearsed) if you rehearse it will last as long as you are rehearsing it ! Sts codes: a. v. l. (acoustic-verbal-linguistic) dominant code, sound based and language based code. Sts capacity: 7 +/- 2 chunks of information, this is how many pieces of information we can keep in our sts, immediate memory . Further evidence: serial position curve, primacy & recency effects, fits with sts vs lts distinction. Sts evidence re-visited: amnesics can learn , using puzzles , pricking hand with a pin, sts codes: more than just avl.
