PSYC 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Daniel Kahneman, Stroop Effect, The Cocktail Party
Document Summary
Every question on the test can be answered using what we have talked about in class. Lecture 3: pattern recognition, visual attention and selective attention. Bottom up and top down processes: bottom up: data driven. Information comes into the senses and flows up through the system: top down: conceptually driven. Space based attention: attention gets allocated somewhere in space: endogenous attention. Looking at one place, but having attention somewhere else. Attention driven from you rather than being cued from the external world: exogenous attention. Changes that grab your attention and your eyes: object based attention: attention being focused on an object rather than a place in space. Our system will automatically allocate itself to objects. Lavier and driver: shown lines with breaks in them. If the breaks were on the same lines, people were faster to notice. If the breaks were on different lines but really close, people were slower to notice: object based attention overriding space based attention.
