PSYC 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Connectionism, Optic Chiasm, Neural Oscillation
Document Summary
Psyc 2700 biological foundations, neuroscience, & connectionism. *all content belongs to jordan richard schoenherr & where cited in lecture slides* We spoke of evidence that can be used to infer cognitive operations (i. e. , dependent variables, dvs ) In terms of information theory & derivative models of decision-making, underlying assumption: info = sampled by nervous system. We will consider most direct source of evidence for cognitive operations: functions of brain itself. Brain hasn"t always been viewed as seat of mental operations. Many early thinkers across many cultures didn"t consider brain central: egyptians removed brain, but preserved other organs in mummification ritual, aristotle believed: heart was responsible for thought. Although often caricaturized as foolish, phrenology was 1st to offer theory of localized function: regions of brain performed particular activities, destruction of given area reduced or eliminated function, individual"s defined on basis of activities of numerous regions.
