Study of development of psychological disorders in childhood: i. e. psychopathy, autism, conduct disorder, etc. Study of basic mechanisms that cause developmental pathways to diverge toward pathological or typical outcomes. Development occurs within multiple contexts, i. e. home, school, community. Development arises from dynamic interplay of physiological, genetic, social, cognitive, emotional, & cultural influences across time. Examine child development from conception until adolescence. Look at 3 themes across lifespan: physical growth & change, changes in thinking or cognition, children"s social emotional development. Finish course w/ better understanding of your own as well as other"s development. Be able to identify major developmental stages, milestones, & processes.
