Devise ways to regulate their own behaviour. Mastery of self-control develops gradually during elementary school. Ability to maintain self-control is consistent over situations (e. g. , confessing to misdeeds) and remarkably stable over time (i. e. 4 to 15yrs)* Encouraging them to think it through on their own. Two year old amanda spilled a cup of juice, just after she"d been asked to leave it on the counter. Amanda"s dad thinks she should be disciplined for disobeying a direct instruction. Her mom thinks she is too young to control herself. Delayed gratification is one of the most important elements of success. The ability to have self discipline focusing on the long term outcome rather than instant gratification. Self-control more likely when parents have control themselves. Children have less control when parents are very strict.
