Bilingual children learn language as rapidly as monolinguals. May be mixed up a little at 1 & 2 yrs. Child will learn in french 50 per cent of the time in senior kindergarten and 100% of the time in grade 1. Achieve levels of written and oral comprehension very similar to those of native french speakers. Spoken and writing abilities may be somewhat lower. Children learn other symbol systems as they grow, such as pictures and scale models. Understand scale models and objects they represent. Gradually add grammatical morphemes (words or endings of words that make a sentence grammatical) Mastery of grammar by rule-based learning, so errors of overregularization occur. Others argue this is too simplistic - learning is more than just imitation. Children produce novel sentences children"s speech has its own grammar.
