Weeks 9-38: period of the zygote (1-2 weeks) Begins when egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube. Period of rapid cell division as it travels down the fallopian tube. Ends 2 weeks later when the zygote is implanted in the wall of the uterus. The fertilized egg 4 days after conception. A small cluster of cells near the centre of the zygote. Develops from cells closest to the uterine wall. The structure that sustains the fetus during development. The zygote undergoes five or six rapid cell divisions. 3 days after fertilization, a 16-cell zygote reaches the uterus. In the uterus, the zygote floats freely for several more days. Divides, creating a ball of approximately 100 cells. An inner cell mass, to become the embryo. Trophe = to feed or to nourish. Develop into the chorionic sac and the fetal portion of the placenta (the organ of nutrient, waste and gas exchange between mother and developing offspring)
