Peer relations in pre and early adolescence are the first true relationships. Parent-child relationships are unequal in terms of power structures, children are ordered or taught by parents, parent in charge. Piaget children tend to be more open with peers than adults, they jointly construct their own explanations and rules for why or how things work or should work. Peer relationships provide a unique context for cognitive, social, and emotional development. Cooperation need to learn to cooperate with others for successful peer relations. Evaluates how socially involved children are at a preschool level with their peers. Solitary plays on their own and ignores other around them. Unoccupied where the child is playing on their own but is looking around and is aware and watching their peers. Onlooker watching their peers, look like they want to join but not sure if they feel comfortable enough to do that. Parallel play two children playing side by side but independently.
