Stages of prenatal development: germinal stage (zygote) Not a recognizable human: fetal stage. Mitosis starts 12 hours after fertilization: cell migration. Cells moving from early points to later parts. All starting at embryonic stem cells and begin to specialize: cell death, hormones. Fetus starts capable of developing as boy or girl and this depends on the male hormone. If antigenes are created or not depends if its a boy or not. Change stimuli, fetus responds": increase heart rate; different rate of sucking behaviour, by 7 months, cns is developed enough for learning, re; sound of mother"s voice; flavour preferences. Teratogens: any environmental agents that can interfere with the process of normal development, anything the mother is exposing herself to she is exposing this to the fetus, drugs can be a teratogen, medical drugs. E. g. , thalidomide - drug women used to take for morning sickness but it was causing babies to be born without limbs etc.
