October 11th & 13th lectures language development. Language: a conventional system of symbols representing concepts and rules of governing the symbols; code and rules. Communication: the process of exchanging information between organisms; can include anything from hand gestures, emotions, body language, emoticons/emojis; much broader term and we know that humans are capable of all forms of communication. There have been ongoing investigations on the existence of language in non-human species. Viki: learned to produce 4 words, deliberately tried for 3 years to try to teach the chimp how to speak, capable of understanding certain words, but could only say (cid:862)(cid:373)a(cid:373)a, papa, (cid:272)up, up(cid:863) Nim chimsky: could(cid:374)(cid:859)t spo(cid:374)ta(cid:374)eousl(cid:455) produ(cid:272)e se(cid:374)tences, nim was raised by a graduate student, nim learned to sign, but there was no evidence that chimps had language. Kanzi: taught through observational learning, some understanding of grammatical rules, spontaneous use. Using his beak, he can tell you what matter objects are made of.
