Ghrelin is a hormone that is secreted in the stomach and the brain, and is a trigger for the feeling of hunger. Levels increase before meals, and go down after meals. After weight loss, levels do not go down as much after a meal and are quicker to rise, leaving people feeling hungrier. People with obesity have quicker ghrelin secretion which leads to more frequent eating. Leptin a hormone produced in fat cells and also in the placenta; it controls weight by signaling the brain to eat less when body fat stores are too high.
