Imposition of a legal sanction on persons convicted of an offence: judges decide about the sentence. Goals of sentencing: denunciation the criminal justice system looks at robbery, rape, murder as bad. It tells society they shouldn"t be doing these acts. Specific deterrent trying to deter the individual from committing crimes in the future. General deterrent sentencing a person to send a message to the public to not commit the same crime. Rehabilitation make them a prosocial individual so they contribute to society. If you stole something or broke something then you owe them or you have to fix the thing you broke. Promote responsibility: *very difficult to rehabilitate through incarceration* If they were younger, they are deemed less responsible. Especially for aboriginal, they are over incarcerated and they try to not incarcerate them: other principle: if they sexually assault a child then they would sentence them to a heavier punishment.
